Film/Television

When gaffers and directors of photography on major motion picture titles want to achieve a high level of control they turn to ChamSys MagicQ.

Film/Television

The MagicQ consoles and software have been used exclusively on many films including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts I and II, Your Highness, John Carter of Mars, Robin Hood, and parts of the Star Wars, James Bond and Game Of Thrones franchises.

One of the draws for film lighting professionals is that MagicQ has strong integration with visualisation systems such as WYSIWYG, ESP Vision, Capture and Light Converse. These tools enable operators to plan and control the lighting of large and complex film sets. It keeps budgets under control to pre-visualize a complicated shot and make most of the artistic decisions long before a large crew and cast arrive.

This process can be sped up even further thanks to the support MagicQ offers for patching from the visualiser. The plot can be designed in WYSIWYG and then transferred to the console at the touch of a button.

Whether it be a hand-held tablet that can take control of a light right next to camera without having to run back and forth to a console position, or the way media players and unusual lighting fixtures can be integrated into the design, MagicQ delivers features that push the envelope and make motion picture magic happen. Consider the vast array of external interfaces and remote control options that allows the system to be integrated with external systems such as camera control, motion control and show control.

As an example of what can be done, major film supplier Panalux developed their Vizilink lighting control system around the MagicQ console and the WYSIWYG visualizer. This system handles initial design and setup of complex sets and motion control shots, and then allows them to be recreated precisely and analyzed spatially for post production graphical calculations.

Testimonials

“The networking on the MQ500 was critically important. I used it to grab a number of values from the festival console and grab things like position palettes to speed up the process. I am always amazed by how easy this is to do on the MQ500.”
– Davey Taylor, Empire Of The Sun

“The MQ500 is the finest console available for this application. When you need to busk something, or find a look in the programmer and seamlessly integrate it into a programmed show, there is no faster professional console than the MQ500.”

– Neil Marsh, Above & Beyond

“It became apparent to me that I was really going to love this console, because it frees me from a lot of concerns so I can focus on the creative process.”

    – Keith Shanks, Game of Thrones
